What's Happening in the Garden?

Balboa has the biggest and best native plant gardens of any school in San Francisco. If you want to help maintain them, please contact:

Bettie Holaday 415-564-3379 bettie_holaday@lycos.com

Gulls, pigeons, and ravens are keeping a watchful eye on student lunches. Summer blooming plants are finishing up and dropping their seeds. Fall bloomers, like scarlet hummingbird fuchsia and the currants, are just starting. Mostly, fall looks like a quiet time of year because many plants and their seeds are dormant, but there is much hidden activity. A host of invertebrates break down detritus, returning nutrients to the soil for next spring's flowers. Bumble bee queens hibernate in their underground burrows while hunting wasps catch invertebrate prey in the detritus to feed their young. Butterfly larvae fatten on leaves before pupating overwinter. Black phoebes hunt for insects while currants, manzanitas, and toyons attract other birds with their berries. Fall is the ideal time to get the garden in shape for next spring and summer!
