Possible Topics

Choose two of the following:

  • Cell phone (or another kind of radio wave) radiation is dangerous
     
  • Microwave radiation is dangerous
     
  • Infrared light is dangerous
     
  • Visible light is dangerous
     
  • Ultraviolet light is dangerous
     
  • X-rays are dangerous
     
  • Gamma rays are dangerous

You do not have to believe that the claim of your topic is true. You will decide whether it is true or false based on your sources!

NoodleTools

  1. Everyone log in to NoodleTools with your Google Apps account: @s.sfusd.edu.from the link above.
     
  2. One partner click “Create a New Project”, choose MLA and Junior, and give it a good name in description.
     
  3. Under "Sharing", click "Share with a Teacher's Drop Box" and type "Kyper Period". Choose your period. 
     
  4. Under "Student Collaboration", click "Add/Remove Students" and add your partners user name. 
     
  5. Click on Bibliography. If you are using Science in Context, choose "Database" for citation type, then pick where the information came from. Use the "Quick Cite" and copy and paste the citation and the URL into the boxes.
     
  6. In the Annotations box, write about whether you think the source is biased or unbiased. Be sure to explain why. 
    • Does the article present more than one side?
    • Are there sources of information listed or linked?
    • Consider who published the information and if there is a reason the publisher might be biased.
       
  7. Still in Bibliography tab, click "New" in the Notecards column to take notes. Use all three sections of the notecard.
    • ​Find one piece of data about the probability of ionization due to that type of radiation. Copy and paste into the Direct Quotation box.
    • Express that information in your own words in the Paraphrase or Summarize box.
    • Based on what the source says and your own knowledge, how valid and reliable do you think each claim is? Add your own thoughts in the My Ideas box.
       
  8. ​Keep going! You and your partner are researching two topics together; for each topic you will need two or more sources.
    We will only be in the library on Monday and the following class; make the most of the time that you have left!

  • Be creative in your use of search terms!
  • You may also look in other places for data, but it must be from a published source (i.e. a book, magazine, newspaper, etc.)!

Next, make some Google Slides

After you finish your research, make some Google Slides with your partner:
 

  1. Use the template HERE.
     
  2. Make a copy.
     
  3. Title the copy "(Period)
    (Your name)(Your partner's name)RadiationProject
    " but replace the part in parentheses with your own information.
     
  4. Share the copy with your partner and kyperk@t.sfusd.edu
     
  5. You can add more slides, change the design, etc.
     
  6. Be sure to check your spelling and grammar when you're done!
